On 8 June, BNF was joined by 24 other conservation organisations for Rainforest: Live 2017. We were live on social media from rainforests around the world for the whole day.

People experienced the wonders of the tropical rainforest without leaving the comfort of their homes. Incredibly, our hashtag #RainforestLive was viewed over 2.4 million times during the event.

All participants posted wildlife sightings, from the forest where they work, on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram from early in the morning. A chorus of gibbon song and the rising sun in Borneo decorated people’s social media feeds to start this special event.

Our OuTrop Team in the Sabangau Forest were divided into small groups to explore this rainforest. They were looking for beautiful wildlife to share with everyone in real-time. They searched for gibbons, orangutans, red langur monkeys, birds, insects, reptiles and other wildlife. All creatures, big and small!

On the day, there were many BNF staff who were fasting as part of Ramadhan. But fasting didn’t deter the spirit of the team searching the forest and rivers nearby. There were lots of great photos and videos of the wildlife they had spotted, which were shared on social media.

Check out some of the highlights from Sabangau:

Rainforest: Live is an annual event. Once a year we have a day of social media activity to give people a glimpse into what it’s like to explore a jungle in real-time. All the posts include #RainforestLive so it’s easy for people to follow on their phones, tablets and computers. We hope that Rainforest: Live was a reminder of all the treasures found in these diverse and unique habitats, and the reasons they’re worth fighting for.
