Tropical peat-swamp rainforests are among the largest terrestrial carbon stores on the planet (“ultra-high-value ecosystems”) – and our working area spans over 600,000 hectares of them. These climate-critical forests are home to a dazzling array of rare and threatened species, including some of the largest populations of orangutans left anywhere on Earth.
As a community-led organisation, we believe that nobody knows how to care for Borneo’s rainforests better than the indigenous communities who have lived there for generations. At BNF, we’re all about building capacity, supporting education initiatives, and equipping communities with the necessary tools to protect their ancestral forests. For all the money invested in carbon-capturing technology, nature-based solutions like protecting peatlands and planting trees are by far the cheapest and most effective.
