As we enter a new year we are excited about what more we will learn about the animals of Sabangau from our camera traps. The cameras are a great tool to discover more about elusive, but not camera shy, forest inhabitants, like sun bears, clouded leopards and other cat species.
As with most technology, it has a limited life in the hot and humid tropics. Sadly, we are down to only a quarter of our camera traps, which are still active. One of our plans for 2015 is to raise more funds to replace these cameras so we can continue our monitoring work.
Despite the small number of active cameras we have a great selection of photos from December, including the endangered pangolin. All species of pangolin are heavily targeted for the illegal wildlife trade for traditional medicine and Sabangau is likely to be a refuge for these scaly mammals. You can learn more about the pangolins of Asia and Africa here.
We have more images of our cats; clouded leopard and marbled cat as well as a sun bear and Malayan civet using our boardwalks.
Images of birds on camera traps are rare so it is very exciting to have a close up image of a greater coucal taken near the forest edge.
