Chilli and Friends (Part 5)

Written by Azis K. (Gibbon project coordinator) and Cara Wilcox (BNF’s primate scientist)

One day, when I was traveling with my family in our area of the forest, my dad was eating and my mum and I were searching for food up ahead. I saw something that I had never seen before; with two legs, two arms, a big hairy head and he was standing on the ground. I was curious, so I went closer and tried to investigate.

I was confused because it looked like he was cutting trees and trying to destroy our forest, behind him some of our feeding trees were already dead on the ground; if he kept cutting there would be no food left for us! I became angry, and tried to chase him away. I shook the trees, and snapped branches at him, getting closer and closer. He just looked at me, and kept cutting our trees. I became very angry, because this is our home! I climbed above him and looked below, I thought ‘what can I do to make him stop?’ So I weed on top of his head, to try to get him to stop! He stopped for a moment and looked confused, but then started cutting our trees again. Then I was confused because I couldn’t think what else I could do, so I called mum and dad to come and help. They came to the area and we all tried to chase him away. My dad was the strongest and worked the hardest to chase him. We were successful as he ran away from the forest, and we waited to make sure he didn’t come back.

I asked mum “Who was that, what was he doing here?” mum explained “that’s a human being, they come here to take trees from our forest; before that was very common here, but now it’s not. Mum and dad will always chase them away, but don’t wee on top of human beings, it’s very impolite. It’s better to chase them from the trees”, I replied “OK mum”. I was happy to help my mum and dad on that day, to take care of our home in the forest. Definitely, humans that want to cut the trees in our forest are not good friends for me, if I meet them again I won’t wee on their head, but I will help mum and dad to chase them away from our home in the forest. Hopefully I won’t meet humans that want to cut our trees in the forest again in the future.

To Be Continued…

Bersambung…
