Chilli and Friends (a new story)

Written by Eka Cahyaningrum (BNF’s Primate Scientist)

Hello everyone, it’s Chilli here! It’s been a long time since I’ve shared my adventures with all of you! I had an exciting experience recently and I couldn’t wait to share my new story.

I was exploring the forest with my family to try and find food. From a distance, I heard faintly the sound of an animal feeding in a tree, and since I’m so very curious, I decided to approach the noise. I found a delightful surprise!

There, feeding with his mother is the orangutan that I met a few months ago! It was Fio! An old friend that I haven’t met for a long time. He then saw me and started to come close.

“You’ve grown since the last time we met!” I greeted him.

Chilli and Fio play on the tree branches

When we met, at first he was hesitant to play with me, and even made a kiss squeak*! But, not long after that, he relaxed, and we played chase and were shaking each other’s tree branches.

Later I told him about my life, that I’ve learned how to sing from my mother since it’s important for a female gibbon to be able to sing to communicate with all the family.

Finally, play time was over and we had to bid each other goodbye. He returned to his mother and they continued on with their journey.

That day was so fun! You know that feeling when you meet your old friend and feel so excited to see them again! I hope we can meet in the near future and have more fun together.

*When an orangutan is disturbed it will make a sound called the kiss squeak. The kiss squeak is not produced due to the voice, but instead through the actions of the lips, tongue, and jaw.
