Chilli and Friends (Part 3)

Written by Azis K (Gibbon Project Coordinator)

Last week, my mum and I were travelling west in the forest. We had just finished eating and were resting in the trees and enjoying our home in the Sabangau Forest. I looked up, down, to the left and when I looked to the right I saw a big, dead tree with a hole in it the size of a hula hoop. I was interested to check what was inside, maybe I could go inside the hole and play! Hehehe!

The dead tree with a hole

I went closer to the tree with the hole and looked into it from above. I couldn’t see if there was anything inside because the hole was dark and deep, which made me curious. I quickly went closer to the tree to get a better look, and I could see that the inside of the tree was furry! I had never seen a tree like that before! I tried to pick the fur, but it held on too tight. I tried to pick it again, and the fur moved! I was shocked and hooted! Actually, this fur isn’t from the tree, but from an animal! She showed me her face; she had a long, black nose and a hairy face! The animal looked a bit angry because I had disturbed her, and the animal made a low grumbling noise from deep inside. My mum came over to check what the animal was because I was still confused. After mum saw what it was, she quickly pulled me away from the hole in the tree. I was a little angry, because I wanted to play with the animal, but mum pulled me away from it.

“Mum, why did we have to leave the animal?” I ask.

Mum answered, “You have to be careful with that animal, they have long nails, big sharp teeth, and if you annoy them, they can be a little bit aggressive, it’s called a sun bear”.

We kept travelling until we reached our sleeping tree. That day was a good experience for me to learn about the different animals in the forest. I don’t think the bear will be a good friend for me because she didn’t want to play! Hopefully, I will find some friends that want to play with me in the forest in the future.
