On 3 June 2016, 11 conservation organisations from around the world will use social media to share live wildlife sightings from the jungles and forest ecosystems that they work to protect. Rainforest: Live is a project run by the Orangutan Tropical Peatland Project (OuTrop), and this year organisations like Zoological Society of London, Orangutan Foundation UK, crees Foundation, Sumatran Orangutan Society, TEAM Network, Tamandua Expeditions, Orangutan Outreach, Swara Owa, Project Anoulak and Gunung Palung Orangutan Project are taking part. They will be posting photos and videos taken by researchers and camera traps to showcase the amazing biodiversity from these magnificent ecosystems. Last year over 1.2 million people followed the event sightings on social media using the hashtag #rainforestlive.
Matt Williams, the project coordinator, said ‘Rainforest: Live is designed to share the beauty and magic of rainforests with people via their laptops and smartphones to give them a sense of what it’s like to walk through the forest. From providing incredible homes to some of the planet’s weirdest and most wonderful wildlife, to storing huge amounts of carbon, rainforests are amazing and we need to do all we can to protect them.
