Emergency
firefighting & prevention

Every year forest fires return to Borneo and engulf the region in a toxic haze for months on end. Urgent help is needed to prevent the fires from returning and to prepare the brave frontline firefighters who protect people and wildlife, save the forest and stop the peat fires that are a major driver of global climate change.

Reclaim Gift Aid

If you are a UK taxpayer, add 25% more to your donation at no cost to you. A Gift Aid declaration allows Borneo Nature Foundation to claim tax back on eligible donations. It means that for every £1 you donate to Borneo Nature Foundation we can claim back 25p, at no extra cost to you.

Tell me more »

By ticking the "Yes" box, I agree I would like Borneo Nature Foundation to reclaim the tax on all qualifying donations I have made, as well as any future donations, until I notify them otherwise. I understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations in that tax year I may be asked to pay any difference. I understand that Borneo Nature Foundation will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid does not cost you a penny more, but can add an additional 25p to every £1 you donate. When Borneo Nature Foundation receives a donation from a UK taxpayer, we're entitled to claim an amount of tax (calculated at the basic rate of income tax in that year) paid on that donation. Once you have given your permission for us to do this on your behalf, there is no need for you to do anything else.

All that is required is that you must be a taxpayer and that would have paid or will pay sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover all the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year. Please note that it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

The amount of tax we claim will be 25% of the total value of your donations in that tax year. Furthermore, if you are a higher taxpayer, you are also entitled to claim the difference between the basic rate which we will claim and the amount of tax you have actually paid. For further details on how you can do this, please contact your tax office. If your tax situation changes and your gifts will no longer be eligible for the Gift Aid scheme please contact us and we will amend your record accordingly.

Borneo’s vast peatland forests are home to the largest orangutan populations in the world, provide economic and social benefits for indigenous communities, and are a major carbon store. Sadly, these forests are being destroyed by annual fires resulting from decades of poor land management.

You may remember the peat fires in 2015 and, more recently, in 2019. Massive fires swept through the region, driven by an extended drought caused by global climate conditions and human activities. These fires destroyed over 2.2 million hectares of forest, including the habitat of over 3,000 orangutans, and released huge amounts of carbon dioxide and other harmful gases into the atmosphere, resulting in the premature death of over 100,000 people. Let’s not allow this to happen again!

Help us to implement grassroots solutions to tackle the impacts and the causes of the fires, and create long-term fire-prevention strategies. We direct resources towards both prevention and emergency response as we are committed to reducing the risk of fires and improving local capacity to fight the flames.

Indonesia’s 2015 land and forest fires were one of the greatest environmental disasters of the 21st century

The biggest long-term problem inside Borneo’s peat-swamp forest is drainage. Man-made canals dug to remove timber, in the past, are now draining the peat of water, drying it out and sending the fire-risk skyrocketing. BNF is working to solve this problem by blocking hundreds of drainage channels in the Sebangau National Park to re-wet the peat and prevent fires igniting.

Restoration of this forest will take time, and in the meantime, fires will continue to occur so we need to be ready. Local community firefighting teams, established and supported by BNF, work tirelessly to extinguish dry-season fires and prevent the spread of more blazes. BNF also supports the CIMTROP TSA firefighting team, which has been active through five major fire events over the past 18 years; and we are connecting community teams from across Indonesia through the Indonesian Disaster Agency.

Please help us to support these committed men and women working on the frontline so they can stay mobilised for as long as it takes to stop Borneo’s devastating fires. In return for your support, you will receive a thank you e-certificate and regular campaign updates.
